THE ADAM-JULIA BRANCH

 

Adam and Julia (Kuczera) Sakry settle in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and establish their branch of the Sakry clan.  Arrival in Minnesota.  Struggle.  Polish community In "West End" section of St. Cloud.  Granite.  Labor.  Railroad jobs.  The family grows.  Adam struggles.  Duelm interlude where John and Martha are born.  Boy Paul (son of Adam and Julia) accidentally drops baby sister Martha, who dies of broken neck or back.  Paul's remorse.  Return to St. Cloud.  Adam stokes coal in Great Northern Railroad roundhouse.  The polluted open well.  Adam drinks its water, is stricken with typhoid fever.  Death of Adam.  Julia is left with six children.  She struggles on.  Julia acquires a house in 1893.  Eldest, Joseph, at age 10, gets odd jobs to help.  County cuts Julia’s meager welfare allowance when Joseph gets bike to sell newspapers.  Mary weds George Roscoe in 1905 and moves to Two Harbors, Minnesota.  Death of Mary at birth of Walter Roscoe in 1906.  Joseph and Julia take Walter into home and raise him.  Paul spoils Walter.  Katherine becomes seamstress, helps family earn an income.  All live in house at 501 - 16th Avenue North, St. Cloud.  Frances and Kate in polish church choir (see photo in Addendum 2).  Frances marries Paul Porwoll.  Their first child, Florence, is born.  Marriages of Paul, Joseph, John, Katherine.  Death of Julia.
