"When once in an alien country talk began concerning our Silesia came, some said say never even heard the name. I became deeply concerned that even neighbours did
not know an once glorified country, that even people not lacking education, did not even recognize the name”.... about 500 years ago Brathel Stein wrote.Today the name
itself is better known, but who knows anything more accurate about its history, the Silesian humans, their old fashioned way of life, their customs and habits? Much has been written down, much has been cited or laid
down with a bad intention, something have even been invented, since in many cases the intention of the writer or the propaganda of the rulers were more important, than "the truth", but ... is there such a
thing as the truth. Probably not, but many "truths" prevail, as many as there are families, which once lived in Silesia, which maintained their own family-history, their own insights and interpretations of
the past. Even if they are very biased, they still are a piece in a tessellated pavement of general history, which should not be distracted from the general political, economical and social surroundings. One is
dependant from the other, always reacts with each other is cause as well as result. Thus the overall picture is not perfect without those individual mosaic stones. Especially in Silesia they are of outmost importance,
since especially here the trotter paths of "school wisdom" have shown to be nothing but lies and fraud. Already in early times life became extremely fast particularly in Upper Silesia. The grandchildren did
not perceive the language of the grandmothers only partly and "national identity" in many places was changed like underwear. Nevertheless the Upper-Silesians are known as "stone-heads" and EVERYBODY
AND EVERYTIME has the right of way. As durable the outer skin may be, they are soft like butter comes the inner part. As two folded and personal as a family history is bound to be, the following parts are
intended to be.... telling more stories than history, which is based on the fact that for the family (Which BTW in Silesia is still playing a major role) - a tax increase raises more important changes, than a change in
administration. As tall as civilisation has grown on, to this respect most of us (and not solely the Silesians) show that once they moved "down the trees” . |
